Chicago Bears Football Club
First, the Decatur (Illinois) Staleys, the team that would later become the Bears, were founded in 1920 by industrialist A.E. Staley. George Halas, who took on the role of player-coach and relocated the team to Chicago in 1921, received the youthful club from Staley.
Early Chicago teams and the Green Bay Packers forged one of the NFL’s most illustrious rivalries. The team changed its name to the Bears in 1922 after winning the APFA championship in its first season in Chicago. The National Football League changed its name to the APFA in the same year. (NFL).
Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski, two Bears running backs who would later be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, were in charge of an effective rushing offense that helped the team win the NFL championship in 1932 and 1933.
In 1932, the Bears defeated the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans 9-0 to win the first NFL playoff game. Sid Luckman, a future Hall of Fame quarterback for the Bears, led the group to four more championships in the 1940s. (1940, 1941, 1943, 1946). The dominant offense in the NFL was Luckman’s revolutionary T-formation strategy, which employed two running backs and got people moving before the play.
Chicago Bears’ Battle
The Mike Ditka-coached 1985 Chicago Bears were led by the charismatic tight end who had previously played for the Bears in the 1960s. When the team created “The Super Bowl Shuffle,” a rap song (and music video) that featured team players boasting about making it to the big game, their confidence in winning the Super Bowl paid off.
The Bears, however, advanced all the way to the Super Bowl in 2006, where they were defeated by the Indianapolis Colts. After the 2010 regular season, the Bears made a return trip to the NFC Championship Game, but the Green Bay Packers defeated them there as well.
The following four seasons were difficult for the Bears, and they failed to reach the postseason. In 2013 and 2014, they reached their lowest point. Even though the Bears’ defense improved over the next two seasons, they still placed worst in the NFL standings. With a 3-13 record at the end of the 2016 season, the Chicago Cubs tied for the most defeats in a season of any Cubs team.
In 2018, the team hired Matt Nagy as their head coach after four consecutive seasons with double-digit losses. Nagy led the team to a seven-win improvement in his first season in charge. Before dropping their opening playoff game by a single point, they won their division. Nagy attempted to revitalize the Bears’ offense in 2018, but the unit struggled in 2019 as the team finished with an 8-8 record. Ryan Poles, the general manager of the Bears, was hired on January 25, 2024.
The next day, the organization declared that Matt Eberflus had been appointed as the franchise’s 17th head coach.
Success Story
Dick Butkus, a linebacker, and Gale Sayers, a running back, were acquired by the Bears in 1965. Who would both go on to become household names for the franchise. Even though Butkus and Sayers would go on to have incredibly successful professional careers, the Bears never made the playoffs while either of them played for the team.
When the Bears selected Walter Payton as they’re running back in 1975, the drought came to an end, beginning a decade of dominance. Emmitt Smith has since surpassed Payton’s record for rushing yards, which he broke in 2002 after being the first player to do so. That same year, Payton was also honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After Payton took over as head coach, the Bears won four division games and their lone Super Bowl game.
