From Football Dreams to the Kitchen

Ramsay was born to Helen (née Cosgrove), a nurse, and Gordon James Ramsay Sr., who worked at different times as a swimming pool manager, welder and shopkeeper. He has an older sister, a younger brother and a younger sister. The family moved often, living for a while on a council estate in Daventry before settling in the Bishopton area of Stratford-upon-Avon when Gordon was nine.

As a boy he wanted to be a professional footballer and was picked to play under-14 football at age 12. Repeated injuries, and finally a serious knee injury, ended that dream. At 19 he decided to take cooking seriously and enrolled at North Oxfordshire Technical College to study hotel management, a choice he later called “a complete accident”.
