Dennis Weaver’s Early Life

Weaver, the son of Walter Leon “Doc” Weaver and his wife Lenna Leora, was born on June 4, 1924, in Joplin, Missouri. His father was of Cherokee, Osage, English, Irish, and Scottish descent. Weaver has wanted to be an actor since he was young. He spent a significant amount of time in Shreveport, Louisiana, and a brief period of time in Manteca, California. He flew Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter planes while serving as a pilot in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Gerry Stowell, his boyhood sweetheart, after the war, and they had three children together.

Education

He attended Joplin Junior College before transferring to the University of Oklahoma in Norman to study acting and compete on the track, where he established records in a number of events.

Career

Dennis Weaver was born in June 1924 in Joplin, Missouri, and died in February 2006. He was in the television series Gunsmoke from 1955 to 1964 as Chester and had just under 100 acting credits to his name. From 1964 to 1965, Weaver played Kentucky Jones on the TV show of the same name. He played Tom Wedloe in the television series Gentle Ben from 1967 to 1969. From 1970 until 1977, Dennis Weaver played Sam McCloud in the television series McCloud. From 1978 to 1979, he played R.J. Poteet in the TV miniseries Centennial, and from 1979 to 1980, Daniel Stone in the serial Stone. He played Rear Admiral Thomas Mallory on the television show Emerald Point N.A.S. from 1983 to 1984, and from 1987 to 1988, he played Dr. Buck James on the show Buck James. Weaver played the lead role in Duel, the debut movie from Steve Spielberg, and Touch of Evil, a 1958 Orson Welles picture. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in addition to winning a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. From 1973 to 1975, Weaver presided over the Screen Actors Guild. At the age of 81, Dennis Weaver passed away on February 24, 2006.

Private Life

Weaver married Gerry Stowell, and they had three sons: Richard, Robert, and Rustin Weaver.  Dennis Weaver was a devout devotee of Paramahansa Yogananda, the Indian guru who founded the Self-Realization Fellowship in the United States. He had been a vegetarian since 1958 and had studied yoga and meditation since the 1960s. At the age of 90, Gerry passed away on April 26, 2016.
