Early Life

Earl Simmons, well known by his stage name “DMX,” was born in Mount Vernon, New York, on December 18, 1970. His rapper name, Dark Man X, is an acronym. DMX was raised in the underprivileged Yonkers, New York neighborhood as the son of Joe Barker and Arnett Simmons, both of whom were still in their teens.

Earl’s father never wed his mother and left them not long after Earl was born. Earl had to deal with the trauma his mother’s boyfriends inflicted on him as a child.

Education

As a freshman, DMX attended Yonkers Middle High School, where he excelled athletically and was the second-fastest runner on the varsity track and field squad. But DMX never did well in school. He dropped out to start a life of crime due of his poor attendance and academic performance. When he was a teenager, DMX turned to armed robbery as a means of income. His first burglary netted him $100, which he used to purchase a leather pit bull harness and leash as well as a pair of Timberland boots for himself.

By the end of the year, he was robbing three individuals every day and made the decision to switch to carjacking because it was a more lucrative form of employment.
