Heritage Day South Africa 2024: History, Activities, Wishes, Messages

On September 24, South Africa celebrates its heritage and its rich, lively, and diverse cultures. Heritage Day is celebrated because South Africa is known as the “Rainbow Nation” for its colour and variety. Its objective is to preserve and uphold South African culture in all of its diversity, accepting all racial and gender identities. We advise you to embrace your inner South African and celebrate with a feast of your own. The day is typically marked by a barbeque known as a braai.

When is Heritage Day South Africa

On September 24, South Africa celebrates its heritage and its rich, lively, and diverse cultures.

Heritage Day South Africa History

Shaka Day, a day set aside to honour the Zulu King of Shaka, was originally known as the 24th of September in South Africa. He was credited with creating the Zulu country by bringing the Zulu tribe together. South Africans would visit his tomb annually to pay tribute to him. A request to reaffirm the day as a legal holiday was turned down in 1995. The main Zulu party, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), objected, but it was ultimately agreed that the day was necessary and would be named “Heritage Day.”

Since that time, South Africans have observed Heritage Day by recognizing the cultural legacies of the several diverse cultures that make up their country. Numerous gatherings are conducted around the nation, and some attendees dress traditionally. The celebration is still referred to as Heritage Day despite a media push that was launched in 2005 to have it declared National Braai Day to honour the custom of a backyard barbecue.
