The Road to the Republic

The 1918 Act of Union gave Iceland control of its own affairs, while Denmark kept responsibility for foreign policy and coast guard on Iceland’s behalf, and both countries shared a king. The act allowed either side to end the union after 25 years. During the Second World War, with Denmark occupied by Germany, Icelanders voted overwhelmingly in a 1944 referendum to become a republic. The Republic of Iceland was proclaimed at Þingvellir on June 17, 1944 — the birthday of independence hero Jón Sigurðsson.

Jón Sigurðsson

Jón Sigurðsson (1811–1879) led Iceland’s 19th-century independence movement through scholarship, politics and peaceful persuasion. His motto, “Eigi víkja” (“Never yield”), still inspires Icelanders, and his statue stands in Austurvöllur square facing the Althing.
