World Basketball Day

World Basketball Day (December 21): History of the Game

On December 21, 1891, in a cold gym in Springfield, Massachusetts, a teacher nailed two peach baskets to a balcony rail and invented a new game. That game became basketball, now played by hundreds of millions of people. Since 2023, the United Nations celebrates World Basketball Day every December 21.

How Basketball Was Invented

James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor at the YMCA International Training School (now Springfield College), was asked to create an indoor game to keep students active during the New England winter. He wrote 13 basic rules, used a soccer ball and two peach baskets, and divided his class of 18 into two teams of nine. The first game ended 1–0, with the only basket scored by William R. Chase. Someone had to climb a ladder to fetch the ball after each goal!

Why the UN Celebrates Basketball

  • It is cheap and easy to play — all you need is a ball and a hoop.
  • It promotes teamwork, fair play and inclusion.
  • It is one of the world’s most-played sports, from city courts to village schools.
  • Sport supports the Sustainable Development Goals by encouraging health, education and gender equality.

Fun Basketball Facts

  • Dribbling was not part of Naismith’s original rules — players had to pass from where they caught the ball.
  • The three-point line was adopted by FIBA in 1984.
  • Wheelchair basketball has been part of the Paralympic Games since the first Games in 1960.

Naismith’s 13 Original Rules (Simplified)

  • The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
  • The ball may be batted with one or both hands, but never with the fist.
  • A player cannot run with the ball; he must throw it from where he catches it.
  • The ball must be held in or between the hands.
  • No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping or striking an opponent.
  • A goal is made when the ball is thrown or batted into the basket and stays there.
  • The team with the most goals at the end wins.

Naismith’s original typed rules were sold at auction in 2010 for over US$4 million and are now displayed at the University of Kansas, where Naismith later coached.
