Sean “Puffy” Combs rose from an unpaid internship to a position as an A&R executive at Uptown before being dismissed by Andre Harrell in 1993, at which point he started his own record label, Bad Boy Records.[2] Craig Mack’s “Flava in Ya Ear” and his debut album, Project Funk da World, were the label’s initial releases. The lead single and debut album by The Notorious B.I.G. (also known as Biggie Smalls), “Juicy,” and Ready to Die, both of which were released in the same year, followed these earlier releases. While Mack’s album received a Gold certification, Ready to Die was a multi-platinum hit. After dominating the charts in 1995, B.I.G. rose to prominence as Bad Boy’s top star and one of the genre’s most well-known figures of the time. The label continued to have success in 1995 with platinum records from Total and Faith Evans. While this was going on, Bad Boy employed a plethora of in-house writers and producers,[3] including Easy Mo Bee, Chucky Thompson, and D Dot, all of whom contributed to the creation of many of Bad Boy’s most renowned releases at the time.

Before 1995, West Coast hip hop ruled the mainstream of rap for three years under the direction of labels like Death Row.
