Barbados Independence Day (November 30): History & Celebrations
Barbados Independence Day is celebrated on November 30 every year. On this day in 1966, the island ended more than three centuries of British colonial rule and became an independent nation. Since November 30, 2021, the date carries a second meaning: it is also the day Barbados became a parliamentary republic. Bajans spend the whole of November — often called “Independence month” — dressed in blue and gold.

From “Little England” to a Proud Nation
English settlers arrived in Barbados in 1627. Unlike most Caribbean islands, it never changed hands between European powers, so it stayed under British rule continuously for 339 years and earned the nickname “Little England”. Its economy was built on sugar and on the forced labour of enslaved Africans, until slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1834 (with full emancipation in 1838).
The 20th century brought a strong labour and democracy movement. The 1937 riots, sparked by the deportation of activist Clement Payne, led to trade unions and political parties. Sir Grantley Adams, Hugh Springer and others won workers’ rights, and universal adult suffrage arrived in 1951. After the short-lived West Indies Federation collapsed in 1962, Premier Errol Barrow led Barbados to full independence at midnight on November 30, 1966, when the Union Jack was lowered and the new blue-and-gold flag raised at the Garrison Savannah.

Singer Rihanna was declared a National Hero the same night. Barbados remains a member of the Commonwealth.
