The Legends Behind Bhai Dooj
Yama and Yamuna
The most popular story says that Yama, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna on this day after a long time. She welcomed him with a tilak, aarti and a feast. Delighted, Yama declared that any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day would be blessed with a long life. That is why the festival is also called Yama Dwitiya.
Krishna and Subhadra
Another legend says that after defeating the demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra, who greeted him with sweets, flowers and a tilak on his forehead.
