Barthélemy Boganda

Boganda was the first Catholic priest from Ubangi-Shari and the territory’s first elected deputy to the French National Assembly. He dreamed of a “United States of Latin Africa” joining the territories of central Africa. He designed the country’s flag, whose four horizontal stripes and red vertical band symbolise unity between Africa and Europe and the blood shared by all people, with a yellow star for independence.

How the Day Is Celebrated

  • Official ceremonies and parades in Bangui.
  • Speeches by national leaders and wreaths at Boganda’s memorial.
  • Music and dance performances, including traditional Aka (BaAka) polyphonic singing, recognised by UNESCO.

Aka Polyphonic Singing

The Aka (BaAka) people of the south-western forests are famous for complex polyphonic songs in which many voices weave together without a conductor. UNESCO recognised this tradition as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. Music and dance are central to Republic Day celebrations.

The country has faced long periods of instability and conflict, and the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSCA has operated there since 2014. National days are often used to call for peace and reconciliation among communities.
