Creole Culture and Independence

Independence in Dominica is closely tied to Creole heritage. Through October, Dominicans celebrate “Creole in the Park”, Market Day in national wear, and Jounen Kwéyòl, when even the radio switches to Kwéyòl. The national dress, the wob dwiyet, is a long, layered gown made from madras cotton, worn with a matching head-tie.

Dishes to Try

  • Callaloo soup — made with dasheen leaves and coconut milk.
  • Bello hot pepper sauce, produced on the island.
  • Provisions — dasheen, yam and green banana with saltfish.
  • Sea moss drink and fresh juices from tropical fruit.

Dominica is also a leader in climate resilience. After Hurricane Maria in 2017, the government set out to become one of the world’s first “climate-resilient nations”, a goal often highlighted in Independence speeches.
