More than 1,000 years ago, the Nordic explorer and Viking Leif Erikson (Viking Leif Erikson) landed in modern Newfoundland and is likely to be the first European to discover the New World. John Blatternick, the US representative from Duluth, introduced a bill in 1963 to celebrate Leif Eriksson Day across the country. On September 2, 1964, the United States Congress passed Joint Resolution No. 88-566, authorizing the President to declare October 9th as Leif Erickson Day. President Lyndon Johnson and every president since then have done so. In the declaration, the presidents generally praised the contribution and exploration spirit of the Nordic Americans.
