What Happened in December 1971
As the Liberation War neared its end and Pakistani forces faced defeat, a planned campaign targeted the nation’s brightest minds. During the war — and most intensively between about December 10 and 15 — members of the occupying army and local collaborating militias picked up prominent intellectuals from their homes. Many were later found killed at sites such as Rayerbazar and Mirpur on the outskirts of Dhaka. The aim was to leave the new nation without the leaders it would need.
The intellectuals were targeted because ideas, education and culture were the foundation of Bengali identity and the independence movement.
