Every year on 11 October, National Coming Out Day is observed in America. The day encourages civic awareness to recognize and support people in the LGBTQ community. This day celebrates a cultural ceremony for individuals who are publicly identified as bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people whose sexual orientation and/or gender identity are similar to those of LGBT people. One in two Americans knows homosexuals. The proportion that applies to transgender Americans is one in ten.

History of National Coming Out Day

The inspiration for National Coming Out Day came from a parade. On October 11, 1987, 500,000 people took part in the march for the rights of gays and lesbians in Washington. After the march ended, a momentum of 4 months was generated. During this period, more than 100 LGBTQ+ identities gathered outside Washington, D.C., and decided to set up a National Day to celebrate their coming out. This was the first anniversary of their historic parade.

Rob Eichberg and Jean O’Leary first proposed the idea of NCOD. Eichberg founded The Experience, a personal growth seminar. At the time, O’Leary was the head of National Gay Rights Advocates. Eichberg later died of complications from AIDS in 1995. He said that the most powerful tool in the human rights movement is to show that most people already know and respect someone in the LGBTQ+ community, and NCOD helps these people expose.
