The inspiration for National Coming Out Day came from a parade. On October 11, 1987, 500,000 people took part in the march for the rights of gays and lesbians in Washington. After the march ended, a momentum of 4 months was generated. During this period, more than 100 LGBTQ+ identities gathered outside Washington, D.C., and decided to set up a National Day to celebrate their coming out. Rob Eichberg and Jean O’Leary first proposed the idea of NCOD. Eichberg founded The Experience, a personal growth seminar. At the time, O’Leary was the head of National Gay Rights Advocates.
