World Basketball Day (December 21): History of the Game
On December 21, 1891, in a cold gym in Springfield, Massachusetts, a teacher nailed two peach baskets to a balcony rail and invented a new game. That game became basketball, now played by hundreds of millions of people. Since 2023, the United Nations celebrates World Basketball Day every December 21.

How Basketball Was Invented
James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor at the YMCA International Training School (now Springfield College), was asked to create an indoor game to keep students active during the New England winter. He wrote 13 basic rules, used a soccer ball and two peach baskets, and divided his class of 18 into two teams of nine. The first game ended 1–0, with the only basket scored by William R. Chase. Someone had to climb a ladder to fetch the ball after each goal!

Naismith’s 13 Original Rules (Simplified)
- The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
- The ball may be batted with one or both hands, but never with the fist.
- A player cannot run with the ball; he must throw it from where he catches it.
- The ball must be held in or between the hands.
- No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping or striking an opponent.
- A goal is made when the ball is thrown or batted into the basket and stays there.
- The team with the most goals at the end wins.
Naismith’s original typed rules were sold at auction in 2010 for over US$4 million and are now displayed at the University of Kansas, where Naismith later coached.
