Halloween Dark History

Happy Halloween Day that we celebrate today has developed over numerous years from a blend of old customs, traditions and new ideas, celebrations. Scottish poet Robert Burns is considered as the person who helped a lot to popularize the word “Halloween” with his 1785 poem of the same name. Most historians opine that the earliest origin of Halloween was from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (Pronounced ‘sah-win’).

This celebration was used to take place at the end of the harvest. The Celtic people believed that the veil between our world and dead worlds become very thin at this time of the year, and spirits had the ability to cross into the living world. This was both a positive and negative to the superstitious Celts. People used to wear masks to appease the spirits and they made huge bonfires that contained sacrifices of crops or animals. The shape of today’s Halloween is the combination of other influences with Samhain.
