The Chicago Convention

As the Second World War drew to a close, 54 nations met in Chicago in November 1944 to plan the future of peaceful air travel. On December 7, 1944, delegates signed the Convention on International Civil Aviation. It set the principles of air sovereignty, safety and international cooperation, and created ICAO, which began work in April 1947 once enough states had ratified the treaty.

How Aviation Connects Bangladesh and the World

Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka is the country’s main gateway, linking millions of Bangladeshi workers, students and travellers with the Middle East, Asia and Europe. Remittances sent home by Bangladeshi migrant workers — most of whom travel by air — are one of the country’s largest sources of foreign income, showing how vital civil aviation is to everyday life.

Careers in Civil Aviation

  • Pilots and cabin crew
  • Air traffic controllers
