International Day

International Talk Like a Pirate Day 2024: Activities, Phrases, Joke, Wishes

The International Talk like a Pirate Day is a parody holiday, which takes place on September 19, 2024. In German it is also known as saying-like-a-pirate-day. It was created in 1995 by the Americans John Baur (“Ol ‘Chumbucket”) and Mark Summers (“Cap’n Slappy”) because of their romanticized-transfigured view of the so-called “Golden Age of Piracy”.

At first, the whole thing was more of an internal fun among the two friends. It was not until the two of them reported the famous columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry on their newfound holiday and then wrote a column in 2002, whereupon other media became aware and reported, the idea got international attention.

When is talk like a pirate day?

The day is celebrated annually on 19 September. For example, on this day, instead of the usual greetings such as “hello”, you should use phrases or accents according to the cliché of a supposedly special pirate language.

Talk Like a pirate day phrases

HORNSWAGGLE — To trick, deceive, scam.

“I’m tired of Pam always hornswaggling everyone out of the last donut!”

CACKLE FRUIT — Chicken eggs, a rare treat for pirates at sea.

“Hi, I’d like a sausage, pepper and cackle fruit sub for delivery, please.”

LICK-SPITTLER — A kiss-up, self-promoter

“Jack picked up the boss’ dry cleaning AGAIN, that lick-spittler!”

CAPE HORN FEVER — An imaginary disease used to get out of responsibilities.

“It’s awfully coincidental Jane is sick the same time that big report is due. Must be Cape Horn Fever.”

BILGE RAT — A rodent living in the darkest, dankest part of a ship; an insult.

“Ugggh. Howard cooked his fish in the microwave, that bilge rat!”

Talk Like a pirate day Activities

  • Have a fancy dress competition. Both teachers and students can take part in, and maybe the most convincing pirate costume could win a prize.
  • Have a short story competition in the classroom. See what kinds of creative spins your students can put on a story about pirates. You could even prepare for this by reading and sharing some stories on the topic for a little inspiration.
  • Study the history of pirates. Who were pirates, really? Students may be surprised how different real pirates were to the fictionalized versions. Perhaps reading up on some interesting pirates throughout history would be a fun way to learn what pirates are.
  • Go on a treasure hunt. This could be a nice way to get students up and about. Try hiding clues and riddles around the school and challenging children to find the treasure.
  • Students can create a display of pirate words and their meanings, so they’ll never be lost for words on Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Put grub in ye gullet

Time was, aspiring buccaneers who talked like a pirate got a free glazed doughnut at some Krispy Kreme locations. Those who went the extra mile and dressed like a pirate got a dozen free glazed doughnuts. That’s not happening anymore.
But at participating Long John Silver’s outlets, you can hook a deep-fried Twinkie by talking like a pirate. If you dress like a pirate, you’ll get a free fish & fry.

Find ye pirate moniker

No made-up holiday in the digital age would be complete without a pirate name generator, and there are plenty of them. This one seems to work pretty well.
