International Day against Nuclear Tests 2024: Theme, History and Observance

Many countries observe The International Day against Nuclear Tests every year on August 29. The day was founded on December 2, 2009, at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The resolution is for increasing awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or for achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world. In the early day, the Nuclear Test fell human life into great risk and danger.

History of International Day Against Nuclear Tests

The United Nations General Assembly on December 2, 2009, at the 64th session, make a resolution to end nuclear tests. They made this resolution to prevent destructive, toxic, and harmful effects on the lives and health of people.  Another purpose is to make an end of any nuclear tests. It will help to achieve the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

It starts with the Republic of Kazakhstan, selecting August 29 as the date of the observance to align with the shutdown of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site on the same date in 1991.

The first observance of the International Day Against Nuclear Tests was in 2010. Every year, massive efforts go into arranging activities across the world; including, competitions, lectures publications, media broadcasts, conferences, symposia, and more.
