How the Wangchuck Dynasty Began
Before 1907, Bhutan was ruled under a dual system created by the 17th-century unifier Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, with a spiritual leader and civil rulers. In the late 19th century, the country was torn by rivalry between regional governors (penlops). Ugyen Wangchuck, the Penlop of Trongsa, brought peace and stability after years of civil conflict.
On December 17, 1907, an assembly of monks, officials and representatives of the people unanimously chose him as Bhutan’s first hereditary monarch, and he was crowned at the magnificent Punakha Dzong. National Day therefore celebrates not just a king, but the unity and peace of the nation.
