From Colony to Nation
Portuguese navigators reached the Kingdom of Kongo in the 1480s, and Luanda was founded in 1576. For centuries Angola was a major source of enslaved people sent to Brazil. In the 20th century, Portugal ruled the territory as an “overseas province”.
The armed liberation struggle began in 1961, with three movements: the MPLA, the FNLA and later UNITA. After Portugal’s Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 ended the dictatorship in Lisbon, Portugal agreed to decolonise. The Alvor Agreement of January 1975 set November 11 as the date of independence.

The Long Road to Peace
Independence in 1975 was followed by a civil war between the MPLA government and UNITA that lasted, with pauses, until 2002. Hundreds of thousands of people died and millions were displaced, and landmines were left across the countryside. The peace agreement signed on April 4, 2002 is commemorated as Peace and National Reconciliation Day. Since then Angola has rebuilt roads, railways and cities, and international teams continue to clear landmines.
