A History of Resistance

Antigua’s story is shaped by sugar and slavery. In 1736, an enslaved man known as Prince Klaas (King Court) led a planned revolt that was brutally crushed; he is now honoured as a National Hero. Emancipation came in 1834, and in the 20th century trade unionists led by V. C. Bird built the political movement that took the islands to independence.

Independence Season Highlights

  • Independence Food Fair — a showcase of local dishes such as ducana, saltfish, black pineapple and goat water.
  • National Dress Day — schools and offices wear the national madras fabric.
  • Ceremonial parade with the Royal Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, police and cadets.
  • Steelband and calypso shows celebrating local music.

Barbuda was badly damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017, and Independence celebrations often include messages of resilience and rebuilding for the smaller island.
