Why Is It Called Boxing Day?

The name has nothing to do with the sport. There are two popular explanations, and both are about giving:

  • Christmas boxes for workers: in Victorian Britain, employers gave servants and tradespeople a “Christmas box” of money or gifts on the day after Christmas.
  • Church alms boxes: churches collected money for the poor in boxes during Advent and opened them on December 26.

December 26 is also St Stephen’s Day, named after the first Christian martyr. In Ireland it is officially called St Stephen’s Day.
