In 1953, Sihanouk travelled to France, the United States and Canada to press his case, and then went into voluntary exile in Thailand and later the Angkor region to draw world attention. France, already fighting a costly war in Vietnam, agreed to hand over military and judicial powers. Sihanouk returned to Phnom Penh in triumph.
The Independence Monument
The Vimean Ekareach (Independence Monument), opened in 1958 and designed by the celebrated Khmer architect Vann Molyvann, stands at the heart of Phnom Penh. Its lotus-shaped tower is inspired by the temples of Angkor, especially the central tower of Banteay Srei. It also serves as a memorial to Cambodians who died in wars.

The Legacy of King Norodom Sihanouk
King Norodom Sihanouk (1922–2012) dominated Cambodian politics for six decades. Crowned in 1941 at just 18 by the French, he later used his popularity to campaign peacefully for independence. After 1953 he abdicated in favour of his father to lead the government directly, and he returned as king in 1993 after years of war and exile. Cambodians call him the “Father of Independence”, and his statue stands near the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh.
