National Adoption Day History

The purpose of National Adoption Day is to draw attention to the more than 125,000 children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted in the United States. National Adoption Day was established by a group of national partners, including the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Alliance for Children’s Rights, and Children’s Action Network.

The objective of National Adoption Day is to attract attention to the more than 125,000 children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted in the United States. A coalition of national organizations, including the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, the Alliance for Children’s Rights, and the Children’s Action Network, created National Adoption Day.

The organization and the Freddie Mac Foundation pushed seven communities in 2000 to open their courts on or around the Saturday before Thanksgiving in order to finalize and celebrate adoptions from foster care.

These yearly, one-day gatherings are currently planned by politicians, practitioners, and advocates in 400 American communities. 75,000 foster children’s wishes have been fulfilled as a result of National Adoption Day activities to date.

2 million Americans are adopted, with 150,000 adoptions occurring annually, including 50,000 adoptions through foster care. Adoptions in the United States might be either domestic or foreign. Domestic adoptions can be planned independently, through an adoption agency, or through a state agency.
