National M&M Day History
These tiny chocolate candies have been around for more than 80 years, but in that time, they’ve had a big impact on American history. They were first created in 1941.
When Forrest Mars Sr. (of the Mars Candy Company), who was living in England at the time, started creating tiny chocolate pieces with a candy shell coating to prevent them from melting as quickly during the Spanish Civil War, that is when M&Ms were born. The Mars Candy Company produced M&Ms in response to this inspiration, and over the years, these tiny candies have made millions of people happy.
M&Ms were only made available to the American military during World War II, who gave them to their soldiers. The US soldiers’ rations during the war included these heat-resistant and transportable chocolates that were packaged in cardboard tubes.
But M&Ms didn’t get their now-iconic little “m” imprint until 1950, after the war. Following the emergence of copycat businesses, M&M customers were urged by a marketing campaign to “search for them on every piece.”
M&Ms made history as the first confectionery to travel to space in 1981. The same factors that made these tiny sweets useful for rations during the war also made them ideal for space travel. The little candies were launched into space by NASA’s first space shuttle, Columbia.
